Windows vista may not have been Microsoft's most successful operating system as the former expected it to be but vista's interface , the "Aero",looks pretty.the main focus of this tutorial is to make the default gnome ubuntu desktop look a close as possible to that of windows vista.this tutorial is completely newbie oriented one to bring the so called "wow" to gnome-ubuntu desktop.
Heres what you can get
Basic elements of vista desktop
1)Icons
download the this icon set .
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Theme.drag and drop the file onto the window.then select the option “apply new theme”.
2)Cursor
Windows vista uses a white aero cursor.download this file.
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Theme.drag and drop the downloaded file onto the window.
select “keep current”
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Mouse.select “Aero”.
3)Font
Windows vista uses Segoe UI font.download it from here.
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Font
press "details" and select "go to font folder"
drag and drop the font file onto the folder.
now close font preferences window and reopen it.
select segoe font for window title, document font and desktop font.
4)gtk theme
download this theme.
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Theme
drag and drop the file and select "apply new theme"
rightclick on the bottom panel and delete it.now right click on top panel choose add to panel and add "window list" and "main menu".delete the menu bar on the left. now rightclick on panel select properties and choose size 30 pixels.drag the top panel to the bottom.arrange the panel items as below:

5)login screen
download this login screen.
Go to Menu->System->Administration->login window
press the "local" tab and drag and drop the file downloaded.
select "vista" theme.
click on background colour and in colour box key in "#54E27D"
6)Desktop Effects
Vista actually has only a few desktop effects."Compiz Fusion", the open source compositing manager when installed will give you many other effects other than the vista ones.for example look at this video.
and not forget it also runs fine under my spare 3 year old computer with 256mb of RAM!!!
to install it on ubuntu fiesty(7.04) visit forlong's blog.
do not forget to install "emerald" and "emerald-themes" packages
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Compiz configuration
select plugin "effects" and click on it and select open/close animation as "zoom" and under "effect settings" tab under zoom,select "zoom from center".
also select "shift switcher" plugin and click on it and select "flip" mode.select "window preview" plugin as well.
Update: latest version of ubuntu, i.e. gusty(7.10) has compiz installed by default.
7)Window Border
Vista has a blurred transparent window border.since we have already installed emerald,download this theme and double click it to install.
8)Sidebar
install screenlets application.download this skin.
9)splash screen
type this in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install gnome-splashscreen-managerthen press alt+f2 and
gnome-splashscreen-managerand get a matching splash screen in gnome-look
finally get some vista wallpapers here.
